Colin retired to the Far East in 2003 and became a student of Chinese language at
Yunnan University. Then came a spell as Director of International Affairs of the
School of Software of Yunnan University, 2004-2005. Today, he can sometimes still
be found around the campus making himself useful leading English language discussion
groups, editing research papers etc. Also, over the years 2002-2009 Colin worked
part-time on English language polishing for the China Internet Information Center
at www.china.org.cn. This is the authorized government portal site for China and
is published under the auspices of the State Council Information Office and the China
International Publishing Group in Beijing.
2000-03 Head of Quality Assurance. Cross-college role at Glasgow College of Building
and Printing (GCBP), responsible to the Vice Principal Academic Affairs for quality
assurance matters encompassing some 10,000 students and 500 staff. Helped college
towards successful Funding Council Review in 2001-2002. Re-introduced a full quality
management system with successful internal and external audits. Introduced an electronic
quality manual first as CD, later on Intranet. College SQA Coordinator. 25% timetable
lecturing in management at Glasgow Caledonian University and in quantity surveying
in GCBP. Some consultancy at board level.
1999-2000 Quality Manager. Responsible to Dean of Faculty. Evolved college quality
manual to electronic format. Module Leader 228 Const. Management at Glasgow Caledonian
University. BSc (Hons) dissertation supervision. 50% lecturing timetable in management
and quantity surveying.
1995-99 Head of Teaching Unit. Responsible to Dean of Faculty for a team of some
20 multi-disciplinary professional staff in two locations together with some 300
full-time students in Construction, Interior Design, Town Planning and Surveying
disciplines. Some lecturing in management, quantity surveying and interior design.
50% lecturing timetable.
1993-95 Resource Manager. Responsible to Dean of Faculty for resources and administration
including faculty time-tabling using IT system. Responsible for 2 administrative,
3 technician and 2 store staff. 50% lecturing timetable.
1989-93 Senior Lecturer in Management. Responsible to Dean of Faculty for a small
lecturing team of construction management specialists and a variable folio of full
and part-time courses. Developed and implemented a new suite of Advanced Diploma
programs.
1986-89 Lecturer, Quantity Surveying, Bell College of Technology.
1977-86 Lecturer, Building Technology, Glasgow College of Building and Printing.

Also very fortunate to have clocked up experience in a good number of different roles
from age 14 onwards. Most significant was a gap-year as a bus conductor. Part-time
and casual occupations have included: delivery boy, paper boy, hotel kitchen-porter,
hotel hall-porter, amusement arcade attendant, gardener, postman, barman, wine waiter,
dance-hall doorman, van driver. Then much later in life, after dinner speaker, and
now even storyteller and poet.
